NEVADA CITY WINTER WONDERS

Who’s ready for the holidays in Nevada City?  The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce Victorian Christmas celebration transforms downtown into a holiday street fair.  This annual, family tradition takes place two Wednesday evenings and three Sunday afternoons in December.  The free family friendly event includes holiday activities for all ages, live entertainment, artisans and vendors, carolers and Father Christmas!  Don’t forget about downtown Grass Valley’s Cornish Christmas, 5 Fridays starting Thanksgiving weekend.  Additional holiday events we love: Nevada City Craft Fair, Country Christmas Faire, Grass Valley Holiday Market.  We also love celebrating local farms, so don’t forget you can go pick your Christmas Tree or get a permit from the Tahoe National Forest.

Our top tips for decorating your campsite include:

  • Pack lights, if you don’t have string lights, don’t forget to check out the solar Luci Lights in the camp store.
  • Bring a fake Christmas tree and a few ornaments
  • Get an inflatable holiday snowman (no snow required)
  • Bring along a wreath
  • Grab some holiday table decorations and have a picnic outside
  • Make a garland
  • Hang your stockings in the tree
  • Bring your favorite decorative holiday pillows

Winter Activities

Here are 15 ideas to help motivate you to get outside and celebrate the season.

  • Go outside, whether it’s skiing, snowboard, snow shoeing or building a snowman.  Who’s been to Sugar Bowl or Royal Gorge lately?
  • Go listen to live music, some great bands come to The Center for the Arts and the Miners Foundry, plus check out Crazy Horse Saloon, The Fern, The Stone House for some smaller venues.
  • Visit a local museum.  The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum or Empire Mine Historic State Park are both great options to learn a little local history on a rainy day.
  • Take an Art Class (ASiF or The Curious Forge).
  • Go wine tasting, whether it’s a local tasting room or check out the upcoming Foothills Celebration wine tasting event.
  • Go take a winter hike.  With our lower elevations, you really can get out and enjoy a walk outside year round (even if it’s raining).  It recently snowed in the Tahoe National Forest, but maybe it’s time to go snowshoeing (you can rent some from Mountain Recreation if you want to try something new).
  • Go to the movies.  You can enjoy Nevada City’s The Onyx, Grass Valley’s Del Oro Theatre or mark your calendar for the Wild & Scenic Film Festival.
  • Celebrate in downtown Nevada City for the Mardi Gras Parade.
  • Ring in the new year with the Chinese Lunar New Year Parade.
  • Read a book, take part in Nevada County Reads or winter reading program at the local library, support The Book Seller or learn from experts at the Sierra Writers Conference.
  • Plan your wedding and check out the Pearls in the Pines Wedding Fair
  • Take the kids bowling.
  • Plan your summer adventures at the Inn Town Campground, always fun to have something to look forward to on the calendar. or go winter camping and explore the area from the comfort of your travel trailer.

The Inn Town Campground’s Yurt recently got 2 new The Inn Town Campground’s Yurt recently got 2 new headboards for the twin beds, always fun to add a few new details and upgrades. If you are unfamiliar with this glamping tent- it’s priced for a family of 4, is insulated and heated, comes with a heated mattress pad for all three beds and is open year round. I also love the little details: Dan made the light fixtures and the entrance wood is all milled from wood at the campground! Please note this tent does not allow dogs (we are dog friendly at every single other camp site at the Inn Town Campground). And a reminder if you are curious about @livingintentyurtco you can stay with us and if you buy a yurt they will credit you back one night of your glamping trip.
