Winter Van Camping & RV Tips at Inn Town Campground

Winter is a peaceful and beautiful time to visit Inn Town Campground near Nevada City.  The quieter season allows a better connection with the campground’s forest, longer nights and a quiet vibe.  Crisp mornings, quiet forest views, and fewer crowds make it perfect for travelers exploring by camper van or RV. Cold-weather camping does take a little extra planning, but with the right preparation, you can stay warm, comfortable, and ready to enjoy the season.  There’s no shortage of things to do in Nevada City and Grass Valley in the winter seasons, check out our winter activities guide for some of our favorite recommendations.

Whether you’re rolling in with a Sprinter van, trailer, or motorhome, here are our top tips for winter van camping and RV stays at Inn Town Campground.

1. Pack for Cold Nights

Even with a heater inside your van or RV, nights can get chilly.

  • Bring extra blankets or a cold-weather sleeping bag.

  • Lay down rugs or foam mats on the floor for insulation.

  • Use insulated window covers or thermal curtains to reduce heat loss.

  • Wear warm layers inside—sometimes cozy pajamas do the trick.

We also recommend using a gas fire pit, if you don’t have one you can rent on from the campground, great way to sit outside and still enjoy the elements, just with a little extra heat.  And, bonus, if it’s raining you can use your fire pit under your awning or easy up.

2. Manage Condensation

Cold temperatures plus warm interiors can lead to condensation buildup.

  • Crack a roof vent or window slightly while cooking or sleeping.

  • Run a fan or dehumidifier if you have one.

  • Wipe down windows in the morning to prevent moisture from freezing overnight.

Good airflow helps keep things dry and comfortable.

3. Cook Warm & Simple Meals

Van life in winter is all about hot food and easy cleanup.

  • Prep meals at home to save time.

  • Rely on one-pot dinners like stews, chili, or curry.

  • Keep coffee, tea, or soup ready in a thermos for morning walks.

  • Get out of the RV and support a local restaurant, check out the Nevada City eating out guide.

Cooking inside is cozy—just remember to ventilate well, or if you need a break from your van, take advantage of the Inn Town Campground’s communal kitchen, the Commons is open to all campers, complete with 2 stoves, oven, refrigerators and dishes.

4. Watch the Weather & Road Conditions

The Nevada City area can see frost or snow during winter months.

  • Check forecasts daily before traveling.

  • Carry tire chains if required.

  • Allow extra drive time on mountain roads, check Cal Trans for up to date road conditions.

  • Ask Inn Town staff about current conditions when you arrive or check out our favorite Nevada County Weather on Facebook (thanks Tom!)

Being flexible with travel plans makes winter trips safer and more enjoyable.

5. Set Up a Comfortable Outdoor Space

Even in cold weather, spending time outside is part of the fun.

  • Bring camp chairs with insulated seats.

  • Use blankets or sleeping pads for extra warmth.

  • Set up under your awning for rain protection.

  • Keep a lantern or string lights handy for early sunsets.

Get creative on how you want to utilize your outside space when it’s colder, maybe you just sit inside the camper and look out the window?

6. Enjoy the Quiet Season

Winter is one of the most relaxing times to visit Inn Town Campground. Fewer campers mean more space to spread out, peaceful mornings with coffee among the trees, and star-filled nights without summer crowds.  We love having the quieter time at camp, while we can work on projects, it’s also a nice time for our guests to get to enjoy a slower season.  Plus, check out our booking engine for off peak season specials!  The rates are lower in the winter time.
