Peak Summer, a Rebuilt Trail, and Fair Season – Inn Town Campground

August in Nevada City means one thing above all else: camp is full, the days are long, and everybody wants to be within splashing distance of the Yuba. We say something like this every summer (broken record, we know, but it's true every single time), so let's get to what's actually new. The historic Independence Trail's flume section is reportedly on track after last spring's 218-acre land transfer from Bear Yuba Land Trust to South Yuba River State Park – worth checking current trail status before you head out, since these things can shift. There's also an active heat advisory this month, so plan your swims for the cooler hours. If any of that has you eyeing a trip, grab one of our last midweek openings before they're gone.

On the operations front, there's not much to report (which, honestly, is kind of the point during peak season – we just want everything humming while camp is full). The pool is open and still not heated, because it never has been and probably never will be. The camp store is stocked and running long summer hours. Outdoor movie nights are happening Friday and Saturday evenings, weather permitting, plus midweek by request if you ask nicely at the store. Glamping units are booking up fast this time of year, as they do every August.

The Independence Trail Flume Is Coming Back

If you haven't been out to the Independence Trail in a while, this is the year to go back. The wheelchair-accessible trail's flume section, which runs along the Yuba River corridor, is being rebuilt following last spring's transfer of 218 acres from Bear Yuba Land Trust to South Yuba River State Park. Local reporting has it as on track for this summer, but trail conditions can change, so check current status before you go. We love a good news story about the river corridor getting more accessible, not less, and this one's worth the short drive – it's one of our favorite outdoor spots within easy reach of camp.

Plan Your Swim Times Around the Heat

We say this every year (there's the second broken-record moment, right on schedule), but it matters every year: there's an active National Weather Service heat advisory this month, with highs running 102-108°F across the valley and foothills. Save the swimming for mornings or evenings, keep water on hand, and check river flows before you head down to Bridgeport, Edwards Crossing, or Purdons Crossing. The river doesn't care what the calendar says.

• Nevada City Farmers Market – Saturday mornings downtown, ongoing all summer; details at the farmers market site
• Looking ahead to September: the Yuba River Cleanup lands Sept 19, and The Infamous Stringdusters and Al Di Meola both hit The Center for the Arts stage later in the month.

Summer doesn't last as long as it feels like it should (we say that every year too, apparently we're consistent about something). Kids go back to school soon, the fair crowds will start rolling through, and midweek openings are thinning out fast (our things to do page can help you make the most of whatever window you've got).
