Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada range, is the gateway to the mountains and was once voted Best Place to Live by Sunset Magazine, Top 10 of Budget Travel’s Coolest Small Towns in America and as one of Outside Magazine’s Best River Towns in America. And we’re super honored to have been voted Best Campground by 10Best. Downtown Nevada City California is walking distance from the Inn Town Campground, so you can experience a getaway while being in the heart of the historic small town.
There’s no wonder why: Nevada City is home to many a natural attraction, including our world famous Yuba River and endless trails and recreational space. This town attracts skiers, fishermen, kayakers, sailors, hikers, water skiers, mountain and road bikers, and everyone who enjoys the outdoors in all four seasons.
The Inn Town Campground is located just a mile from downtown Nevada City in a grove of oaks. Guests can enjoy downtown for its wide variety of restaurants, live theater and music, wine tasting, specialty shopping, coffee shops, art galleries, and more.
Born during the California Gold Rush of the 1840s, Nevada City’s civic leaders, realizing the town’s historic importance, have committed to preparing for the future by preserving the past. Nevada City’s entire downtown district is a national historic landmark. The town was incorporated in 1850 as Nevada (Spanish for snow covered), but the name was later changed to Nevada City, after its title was borrowed by the new state to the east.
Nevada City is a friendly, close-knit community, where old-fashioned and down-to-earth celebrations are a way of life. In the summertime, you’ll find the Nevada City Farmers Markets, outdoor music festivals, parades, Nevada City Summer Nights, First Friday Art Walks, the Sierra Storytelling Festival, and the ever-popular Nevada County Fair.
Winter wonderland in Nevada City, while it’s not super common, it’s a magical sight to see when it does snow. And if you’re not interested in winter camping (although it’s rather comfy in your travel trailer in the colder months), check out the Nevada City Chamber’s list of local hotels near us for additional options. Or maybe you’re planning a family reunion and not everyone wants to camp? There are additional hotels, B&Bs and lodging options near us.
During the fall, visitors can enjoy the Constitution Day parade complete with an authentic Civil War battle reenactment, the Draft Horse Classic, and the area’s breathtaking fall colors. Shopping for the holidays is a delight, especially during the Victorian Christmas street fair, with its arts and crafts, Christmas caroling, hot cider, brass bands, and haywagon rides.
And while we love Nevada City, one of the benefits of camping at the Inn Town Campground is you have close access to downtown Grass Valley, whether you’re shopping, eating out, enjoying Empire Mine Historic State Park or checking out a show at The Center for the Arts.
Downtown Grass Valley offers a charming blend of history, culture, and small-town ambiance nestled in the heart of California’s Gold Country.
As you wander through downtown Grass Valley, you’ll encounter an array of unique shops, boutiques, and art galleries housed in historic buildings. From antique stores brimming with treasures from yesteryears to cozy cafes serving up artisanal coffee and freshly baked treats, there’s something to delight every visitor. Our favorites include Yuba Blue, Cake and Carolines.
One of the highlights of downtown Grass Valley is its vibrant arts scene. The town is home to numerous galleries showcasing the work of local artists, from paintings and sculptures to jewelry and pottery. Art walks and exhibitions are regular occurrences, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the creative spirit of the community. Make sure to check out the Granucci Gallery in The Center for the Arts, the downtown Grass Valley murals and Art Works on Mill Street.
As the sun begins to set, downtown Grass Valley takes on a magical ambiance, with twinkling lights illuminating the streets and live music drifting from cozy bars and cafes. Whether you’re savoring a leisurely dinner, browsing the shops for unique souvenirs, having a drink in the historic Holbrook Hotel or simply taking in the scenic beauty of the surroundings, a visit to downtown Grass Valley is sure to leave you with small-town charm.
